One of the most important lessons I learned from Trinity Seminary in Chicago is to keep an open mind. It was interesting for me to see two of my former professors debating on the subject of Infant Baptism. It was even more interesting to see three of my professors writing a book together on “Three Views on the Rapture”. Each of them presented his own viewpoint graciously. While it is important to have personal convictions, it is more important to keep a humble attitude and a willingness to listen to other people’s viewpoints. Professor John Steward Mill said, “The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind.” In the four gospels, Jesus asked at least eighty-seven questions. Jesus knew everything, so, when he asked a question, He was not seeking information or an answer for Himself. I believe Jesus asked questions frequently as He taught because He wanted to stimulate us to keep our hearts humble and our minds open. Jesus wasn’t just following the Jewish wisdom of making use of questions in conversations; rather, He was teaching us something important by setting an example. As we follow Jesus, we should not assume that we have the answers to all of life’s problems. I would be the first one to admit that I don’t. As I review those questions in the gospels, I get the clear impression that Jesus wants all His followers to maintain an open, sensitive, and humble attitude. I pray that God will help us obey Jesus’ teachings. |
