Recently, while savoring the history of my former seminary in Hong Kong, I was moved to pay tribute to Miss Amy Law, our seminary’s former Principal. I have always believed that God’s design is for men and women to work together for His kingdom. Men and women are equally important in the service of the Lord. Many stories in the Bible as well as in church history have led me to admire the heroic deeds of many women of our faith. My alma mater was originally located in Wuzhou, Guangxi, and was known as the Alliance Bible School. It was the first Bible School outside of the United States to be founded by the Missionary Alliance. Dr. Robert Glover went to China and started the Men’s Bible School in 1899. Amy Law, a teacher at the True Light Girl’s School in Guangdong, was 26 years old when she heard the preaching of Dr. Glover and was deeply touched. Amy responded to Dr, Glover’s challenge and agreed to join him to establish the Women’s Bible School. Amy spent the next 31 years serving in the Bible School, until her retirement. She chose to live a life of celibacy and voluntary poverty. In order to construct the Women’s School Building, she gave up all her possessions. Another missionary, Miss Rutherford, urged Amy to keep some of her money for her own use. Amy replied, “No, I have always loved that old hymn ‘Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord for Thee’. But I could never sing that line ‘Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold.’ Now I can. Come let us sing it together.” What a remarkable woman! It was because of Amy Law that my former school began to train women for the ministry. I was joking with my wife the other day, that if it were not for Miss Amy Law, she would not have had the opportunity to study in our school, and had that been the case, poor me, I would still be a bachelor today! |
